The reasons for having a BIOS password are mainly for security. There are usually two types, user and admin passwords. The user password can be set so only the user can logon to the system. The admin can be set so that only the administrator can access the BIOS.

There are a many ways to get passed a BIOS password. Here are the most common in the order you should attempt.

• Reset the CMOS using the jumpers
• Removing the CMOS battery
• Using a manufacturers backdoor password
• Use password cracking software

If you forget the password its relatively easy to correct. Use the clear cmos jumper first. Its usually located near the battery. Can't find it? Didnt work? Well I always use the battery method. Make sure you remove the power supply too because otherwise the standby power will keep the cmos settings. So if both the above methods fail or you cannot access the system for instance if it's a locked box or a laptop, we just move on to options 3 and 4.

Backdoor passwords.

There are quite a few. Just type in a few of these depending on which BIOS you have. If this fails don't worry we still have option 4.

No luck? NO worries. Now we can go on to option 4. This one is difficult mainly because the programs are detected as viruses. The most common util is called killcmos.
